Sleeping bags are generally classified into two shapes: Mummy-style and Envelope-style.
Mummy-style:
As the name suggests, this type of sleeping bag resembles the shape of an Egyptian mummy—wider at the shoulders and tapering down toward the feet. The upper section can be drawn tight to wrap around the head, helping to retain body heat.

- Advantages: Fits the body contour closely, saves space, and offers high thermal efficiency. Ideal for low-temperature environments.
- Disadvantages: Limited internal space while sleeping, which may reduce comfort.
Envelope-style:
Named for its rectangular shape similar to an envelope, this type is commonly used for camping in milder conditions during low-intensity outdoor activities, or as bedding at home or in hotels.

- Advantages: Spacious interior for a more comfortable sleep; can often be fully unzipped to use as a blanket or sleeping mat.
- Disadvantages: Less effective at heat retention; bulkier and heavier, taking up more storage space.
