Sleeping bags can also be categorized by filling material: Synthetic (Cotton), Down, and Fleece.
Synthetic Sleeping Bags (Cotton Filled):
Most outdoor enthusiasts use synthetic sleeping bags. With a comfort temperature range of around 0–5°C, they are sufficient for spring, summer, and autumn activities. Most synthetic bags today are filled with hollow cotton, which features tiny hollow fibers that reduce weight and significantly improve thermal performance.
- Advantages: Affordable, retains some insulation even when slightly damp, and dries quickly if wet.
- Disadvantages: Bulky, takes up significant backpack space, and has a shorter lifespan.
Down Sleeping Bags:
Primarily used in cold weather outdoor activities, down sleeping bags are usually filled with duck down or goose down (goose down offers slightly better warmth under the same conditions). Due to the high volume of air trapped between the down clusters, these bags provide excellent insulation and compress well. At the same weight, they outperform synthetic bags in quality.
- Advantages: Lightweight, highly compressible, space-saving, and long-lasting. Well-maintained down bags can last over a decade.
- Disadvantages: Expensive and not ideal for humid environments. If wet, they are difficult to dry and lose significant insulation.
The quality of a down sleeping bag is determined by several factors: fill weight, down content, fill power, and baffle construction.
- Fill Weight: Refers to the total weight of the down filling inside the bag. Reputable brands clearly label this.
- Down Content: The percentage of down clusters versus feathers in the filling. Feathers provide structure, but warmth comes primarily from the down clusters.
- Fill Power: Measures the loft or fluffiness of the down. It is determined by placing a specified amount of down in a graduated cylinder and measuring the volume it occupies after compression. Higher fill power indicates better quality and greater warmth, but also a higher price. Basic outdoor down products typically have a fill power of 550; high-quality ones range from 650 to 700, with some reaching 800.
Fleece Sleeping Bags:
Made from synthetic fleece material, these bags are relatively thin. When used alone, they offer limited insulation and are often used as summer sleeping bags or as simple bedding for hostels and indoor use.
